A strong showing

CF wrestlers emerge from state tourney with a champion and two runners up

Six state participants. Three wrestlers in the finals match. One state champion. The Cannon Falls Bomber wrestling team was well represented last weekend during the 2014 Wrestling State Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center. Paul Fitterer and Ryan Epps both came away from the tournament with second place finishes and Senior Clay Broze, last years 220 Ibs champion, came out on top once again this year.

It was crazy; I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to pull this one out

“It was crazy; I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to pull this one out”, Broze said of the final match against Benilde-St. Margaret’s Christian DuLaney, who Broze beat earlier in the year at a tournament.

“He wrestled way different this time and I wasn’t expecting that.” Broze continued. It looked for awhile like Broze may dethroned as the top class AA 220 Ibs wrestler. However, he was once again able to resort to his signature move in the waning moments of the third period. Down 5-1 in the final period, Broze pulled a headlock which eventually turned into a take-down, which turned into pin, which turned into a state title.1959433_654096804626221_1087194673_n

“It was a great way to cap off the season,” Broze said of the title victory, “But it was also great having so many teammates compete at state with me, the amount of participants we had this year definitely speaks to the quality of our program.”
