Galloping Gourmets savor sweets

Lantern reviewers go on the road to review Red Wing’s Hanisch Bakery.

Recently awarded “The Best Bakery in Minnesota” by WCCO, the Hanisch Bakery sets high standards for the dynamic duo (AKA Sadie and Kelli). Located in the heart of downtown Red Wing, it’s location is ideal for locals as well as people all around the area. The bakery had a large selection of baked goods ranging from bread and cookies, to donuts and brownies.

With not much left late in the day, it was hard to choose what pastries to purchase. After scanning over all the options, we decided on four different products. Our initial selection was a beautifully decorated chocolate pudding filled bismarck. The donut’s frosting was perfectly complimented with a creamy chocolate pudding filled to the max. Next, a lemon filled roll really caught our eye. Just like the bismarck, it was extremely gooey and tasty. Not only was the lemon sweet, it also had a perfectly tart taste. Taking a different turn, we picked out a chocolatey brownie that was just the right size. What we didn’t like about the brownies was that of all the flavors to choose from, every one of them contained nuts. Besides that slight disadvantage, it was very rich and tasty. Finally, we found ourselves disappointed with the sugar cookies. We found the taste was nothing special and overall pretty bland. Of all the the products, we definitely won’t be purchasing this tasteless treat again.

After thinking it over, we have decided to give the Hanisch Bakery a 7.5 out of 10. Though we were quite impressed with the donuts, the brownie and the sugar cookie didn’t live up to our expectations. Despite these disappointments, we will continue to return to Red Wing to purchase the decadent rolls again. We can now see why WCCO gave this small business their award because of their wide variety of products. After that sugar rush, our next adventure will have to be somewhere a little saltier.
