Wrestling season for Cannon Falls was officially over after February 27, 2017 (the day of the state wrestling tournament). This year, Bombers wrestling only sent one wrestler, Hayden Strain, to the state wrestling tournament. Unfortunately Hayden didn’t place at the state tournament but as a junior, he still has another year to increase his skill and maximize on his potential for next year. The team only had Hayden as a state competitor but several of the team members made it to sections, one of whom was Gavin Gates who placed fourth (just missing state in his weight class). Wrestling is a lot more than just winning and going to state; it emphasises individual performance, but is still definitely a team sport.

One energetic junior who also went to the section tournament, Dylan Rohr, outlined the Bomber wrestling season in an interview. When asked what the highlight of the year was for him, Rohr provided his experience of going to the section meet. He said that it wasn’t just going to compete the sport that he loved but also venturing down to the tournament the day before, and spending time with his fellow teammates. Dylan is a prime example of the spirit of wrestling. He loves the sport and competing, but also loves hanging out with his comrades. In his interview Dylan also speculated the team’s future.

In describing this year Dylan said that they “did decent with what we had.” The team is a relatively small team and so they don’t have the sheer numbers that some schools have to win. However that doesn’t discourage the Cannon Falls wrestling team. They work hard to push themselves as far as they can and represent the team successfully.

Next year is looking on the bright side

— Dylan Rohr

When asked about next year Rohr commented, “Next year is looking on the bright side, we are only losing one senior.” He also said that the team will have several youngsters coming up to varsity next year. So despite a low record this year, the team is only going to rise from here. The Cannon Falls’ wrestling team has a bright future and the young men in the program are already excited for what is to come.
