“We the People of the United States…” The famous words of the U.S. Constitution’s preamble are known across the country, and have been scrutinized by many hoping to follow in the footsteps of our Founding Fathers, including the students of Heather Loeschke’s AP Government class. On December 11th, the class made their way up to the State Judicial Building, where they all took part in the We the People competition, which focuses solely on the United States Constitution.

In the competition there are six units, each made up of either three or four students, all receiving help from coach Loeschke as well as from former teacher Tony Meyer. Every unit focuses on a different aspect of the Constitution of the United States, from the philosophy behind its creation, to the Bill of Rights, and even how it’s being applied in the country today. Each unit is scored on a sixty-point scale, and then the points are added up to give a total among all six units, and whichever team scored the most points wins the state level of the competition, moving on to nationals.

The groups competed early in the morning, and found out they advanced on to the national level in the awards ceremony the same afternoon, much to the joy of the students and advisors who all put in a tremendous amount of work to get to there. Although Loeschke and Meyer hoped to sweep the competition and have all six teams win, the team won three out of six units, and scored the most overall points, moving them on to the next level in Washington D.C. at the end of April.
