Candle writers gather to discuss strategy

January 12, 2017 is marked as the birth of a new generation for our school’s publications. The students of the Cannon Falls Elementary School have recently been given the opportunity to create their own online newspaper called The Candle under the supervision of 3rd grade teacher Deb Kadrlik. The paper’s staff includes 26 students ranging from third to fifth grade who work hard every Thursday afternoon from three to four o’clock. The junior writers have the opportunity to write for five separate categories: Classroom and Corridors, Sports, A&E, Feature, and Opinion. Not too long ago I had the opportunity to interview some of our newest members of the Cannon Falls school paper and got their inputs on the club.

The first young writer I met was an adorable, blonde haired 4th grader who goes by the name Athena. She was by far the most confident in the room by being the first to speak up as I  walked through the doors of the computer lab. When I questioned her about why she wanted to join the newspaper she stated, “I want to be known in school and I thought it would be interesting”. Her favorite part is interviewing fellow classmates for her articles which makes perfect sense due to her energetic and talkative personality. Her first story, and currently her only article on The Candle, is titled “Veteran’s Wall” which reflects on the wall decor set up at the elementary school to honor our veterans during the holiday. When I went to witness their rendezvous, she was working on a new article titled “Find Your Emoji” which she was working on with her fellow classmate and Candle member Katie, who is also known around the newspaper as “Bibbles”. Katie joined The Candle for the simple reason that she loves writing like many other of the students participating in the club. The Candle is proving to be an excellent way for our future Lantern editors to get exposed to writing articles while having fun at the same time.
