turning it around

The Bomber football team has struggled as of late. After starting off with a dominant win against Zumbrota-Mazeppa, the Bombers have slumped and grumped their way to a 2-4 record.

After Zumbrota, the Bombers got into an early hole against the Bulldogs of P-E-M, but didn’t give up and battled back to a one score game, losing by seven. Next, the Bombers played the Tigers of Stewartville, who were ranked third in the state in AAAA. A tough game all around, the Bombers couldn’t penetrate the horde and lost 41-7.  The following week, the Bombers faced off against Rochester Lourdes, who are ranked in the class CFHS plays in, AAA.

Another tough start led to an early deficit that the team failed to overcome, although, as senior captain Gabe Hall noted, they tied six to six in the second half, losing 28-6.

The most recent game was the Homecoming matchup against the Byron Bears. A close and thrilling game for players and fans, the match was a defensive standoff, the match was tied 0-0 at the half. After the break, the battle ensued, and it was a worthy of a Hollywood script. Both teams gave 100%, and it often came down to a single play. The Bears broke free for a long touchdown run, and the Bombers completed a deep bomb to set up their own score. However, on the Bombers attempt to kick for the point after, the bears broke through the line and forced the holder to pull the ball and throw it up for grabs. The score of 7-6 lasted for the rest of the game.

Following Homecoming’s close loss, the Bombers went to Lake City to try to ruin their homecoming. In a wondrous performance, the Bombers thrashed the Tigers 39-14. It was a turning point in our season,” said junior linebacker Carlton Lindow. “We were in rough shape following the losses. But the Homecoming game, while still disappointing, showed us that we can compete, that we can win some games. And on Friday, we did.”Paige Holt

Next up, the Bombers play the final two games of the regular season at Kasson-Mantorville on October 2nd and at home vs La Crescent. After them, it’s time for the playoffs.
