Every kid dreams of a world where they can do whatever they want: eat any food, go anywhere, or buy anything. Sadly for them that type of life isn’t realistic, and adults are the ones who have to shut down their dreams by telling them no. Allison and Carlos Torres always said yes to everything before they had kids. Whether it was skydiving or rock climbing, they were always up for a new experience. But the passing years and three kids dulled their sense of adventure, trading it for a safe and accident free life. That was until they discovered yes day.
Yes Day is a lighthearted comedy movie. It came out on Netflix in 2021. Allison and Carlos’ children Katie, Nando, and Ellie want more freedom from their parents. Like many kids, they feel like they never get to do anything and even submitted a school project calling their mom a dictator. Allison and Carlos decide to have a yes day – a day where they have to say yes to everything their kids ask to do. There are, of course, some rules, like they can only travel certain distances and they can’t do anything dangerous, but other than that the general idea of a yes day is that the kids choose how to spend the day and their parents have to agree.
The movie is based on a children’s book that’s also called Yes Day by author Amy Krouse Rosenthal. In the book, a little boy has all of his wishes met. His parents say yes to everything. It’s nice to have some movies to watch that aren’t too serious. Yes Day is one of those movies. It’s fairly short and shows the complicated reality of being part of a family. They’re not always perfect, but everyone comes together in the end to help and care for each other. Yes Day is not very high quality, but it’s a feel-good movie that is perfect to watch with family.
Although Yes Day certainly isn’t the most remarkable movie, it is entertaining and portrays interesting life lessons that can be taken into the real world. The movie displays the importance of giving kids some freedom from their parents while also having structure and discipline. It’s fine to let children have some fun days and do things that adults might normally say no to. Yes Day may even inspire some to have their own yes days in real life. Although it may not be realistic, living life by saying yes to every new experience is still fun to think about. Adults could definitely learn from their kids that it’s good to try new things that they wouldn’t normally do.
