A Fire in Her Eyes

Cannon Falls Senior Emi Trost Knows What it Takes to be Number One

Running out before the race starts she wants to get in the mindset of what she will do next. Being nervous, she ties her shoes twice, double knotted. She has a shiny forehead that portrays the adrenaline coursing through her veins. “Five minutes remaining!” Saying a quick prayer she’s ready to execute what’s needed. “Ready, set, bang!”, Emi is off with lightning bolts beneath her toes and a fire in her eyes. Intense, high schoolers say or maybe crazy, this is Emi Trost and she is dedicated to running. Emi is one of the most motivated track and cross country athletes amongst all high schoolers and stands out in a crowd. But the real question is how does she do it? Many of us walk around highschool saying these phrases: “I’m tired.” I want to go home.” “I’m not ready for this test.” A wise man once said (Mr. Schopp), “Once you get older it’s hard to have motivation, because you’re thinking been there, done that.”

Being motivated has a lot to do with how you were brought up. Mr. Schopp has said that “Emi has continuously been successful due to her not being stressed easily and the cross-country’s encouraging teammates.” Emi started aspiring the title of “road runner”, through the motivation of her family, friends, coach, and especially faith. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”, is Emi’s quote for her seasonal sports.  She quotes,” When I first made it to state in cross country (8th grade) I wasn’t really thinking of becoming champion.” As our conversation went on she told me to stay motivated the person has to start with smaller goals such as waking up at a certain time in the morning. Once someone accomplishes this they need to make bigger goals and so on. Many people think,” Well it’s easy for her to say”, but the truth is it all has to do with mindset. Mrs. Hoffman says that it is best that kids talk themselves up rather than talking themselves down. Emi does this and is taking this mindset with her to college. Next season for Emi Trost will be a whole new ball game and who knows what she’ll bring to the course. The final stretch, “an 800 left”, the coaches say. She runs to the finish with every last bead of energy earning her title, champion.
