The Cannon Falls Bomber Baseball team has started its season with an impressive record of 12-3. They recently secured the spot as HVL conference champions, an immense accomplishment in such an arduous conference. With this strong start to the season, the Bombers have quickly established themselves with serious post-season potential. After speaking with Junior Evan Miller, Senior Micah Nelson, and Head Coach Bucky Lindow, it’s evident they are confident they will make a deep playoff run.
Junior Evan Miller is a 3rd baseman for the team, along with being a forceful pitcher on the mound. Miller emphasized that the team’s hope for this season is to win the sections and advance to the state tournament. With that, it is evident that Miller is not the only person on the team with this goal, as Head Coach Bucky Lindow and Micah Nelson depicted similar goals. Miller explained that the team’s greatest strengths have come to be their strong hitting and fielding. Having good batting for a team is extremely important and frankly, the only way to earn runs in the game. Lastly, Miller stated that the area the team is in search of for the most improvement is pitching consistency. He explained, “We aren’t too bad, but there’s definitely improvement to be made on a lot of guys.” Having strong pitchers on the mound is crucial for the team’s ability to stay active on the defensive side of the game.
Senior Micah Nelson has been a crucial part of the team for some years now. He is a starting center fielder and always a weapon at bat. An important part of having a strong team is their chemistry and work ethic. Nelson said a typical practice begins with throwing and baserunning before moving into defensive drills and finishing with batting practice. Having a productive practice daily is what allows teams to surpass their goals, which these players have made clear by making it deep into the section tournament. One of the team’s biggest competitors they have faced this season is last year’s state champions, Pine Island. Nelson said, “They have a strong returning core,” meaning they didn’t lose many players after their state championship last spring. Lastly, Nelson touched on the team’s season motto: “juice.” To them, this means having high energy and effort in everything they do, no matter the challenge.
Head Coach Bucky Lindow has been on the Bomber Baseball Team’s coaching staff for 27 years now. With so much experience, he has led this team to do some great things during his team, including 3 state tournament appearances. Throughout his time, he said he has learned that in order to have a successful team, you must be consistent with everyone, just simply living in the present moment. Having the ability to see and talk positive images, and do the little things that eventually contribute to the result. He also spoke on the team’s great improvement in their fielding and defensive abilities over the first weeks of practice, which simply came from all of the players coming to practice every day with a positive mindset, along with being ready to work. Lastly, Coach Lindow explained that what makes this team stand out from the rest is their great pitching depth. Three guys on the team have pitched considerable varsity ball so far, and many others are ready to pitch some quality innings for the team.
With the postseason near, the Bomber Baseball Team hopes to continue to build momentum and strive to surpass its goals. There is something special about this team, and after speaking with Coach Lindow, Nelson, and Miller, it is clear that they have a bright post-season ahead of them.
