A Pentatonix Christmas
Hannah Brummund reviews the Pentatonix Christmas album
January 15, 2015
The Winter holidays are a special time in the year, full of giving, cheer, family, and their own special music that everyone loves. Countless artists sing their own remixes of classic holiday songs (during the correct season), and the a capella group Pentatonix is no exception, releasing a new Christmas album in December with new versions of beloved classics that will send you to sleep with visions of Sugar-Plum Fairies dance over your head.
Pentatonix has been steadily gaining more popularity, especially in the world of acapella, and they do not disappoint with the newest addition to their collection of covers and original arrangements. This year’s album, “That’s Christmas to Me”, has already gone platinum, with its eleven tracks, and includes favorites such as “Silent Night” and “Sleigh Ride”, and even has their version of “Let it Go” from the popular Disney movie Frozen.
The group’s wide vocal range gives way to chilling dissonance, warm chords, which truly display the talent in the group and their ability to easily change tones in a snap, like in “White Winter Hymnal”. However, they don’t limit themselves to simply changing up their harmonies, and also use a blend of the classic choral tone and a modern remix to their songs (a dash of beatboxing and some adjusted rhythms) such as in their rendition of “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” from The Nutcracker Suite.
It really is the most wonderful time of the year, with Pentatonix’s newest album to curl up and listen to on these cold winter’s days, or all year around (no shame there, everyone busts out holiday songs in the oppressive heat of summer). For now, the warm sound of five ridiculously talented people can fight off the cold days until spring arrives in our eternal winter wonderland.
