Hailie Lindblom is an average eighth-grader, she has good grades, she’s part of a closely-knit group of friends, and decorates cakes for profit. Now that last thing is pretty out of the ordinary.

Most eighth graders spend their time after school in activities, such as track or speech, Hailie spends her time baking and decorating. “I started making cakes after I stayed at a hotel. I was flipping through channels and I saw this show about cake decorating and I said, ‘I want to do this!’”

Hailie brought in a lemon flavored cake for the Torch to taste test and everyone enjoyed it. One of the comments included, “You know what kind of cake this is? Amazing cake.” She even cut it in a specific way, a circle in the middle and the outer ring was sliced into about equal pieces. She later confessed that she bought the frosting from the local bakery and used it on the cake.

“I’m being very unprofessional with my baking because I just use boxed mixes most of the time. But I do line the baking pans ‘professionally’.” Hailie stated, “I like baking cupcakes but there’s so little space on it for design, so I think I prefer to decorate cakes even though cupcakes are easier to bake.”

When asked about her favorite cakes that she’s made, Hailie responded with, “I think my favorite cake that I’ve made was one of my grandma’s birthday cakes. She lives on a pig farm so I made her a cake with little fondant pigs. It had a fence too, it was made of Kit-Kats.”

Life may not be easy for many but for Hailie Lindblom, it’s a piece of cake.
