The Bomber Varsity tennis team ended its season with a home match against Rochester Lourdes. They played competitively and came out on top with a 7-0 sweep. The Bombers also had three athletes secure a trip to state—Josie Sjoquist in singles and Sophia Nerrison and Livia Tennesen in doubles. Overall, the team had a successful season, closing out with a winning record of 9 wins and 3 losses.
The Bombers had six sweeps throughout the season, sweeping teams such as Rochester Lourdes, Columbia Heights, and Cotter. The Lourdes were a tough competitor in years past, so winning 7-0 two times was a monumental accomplishment. Sophomore Miranda Mandelkow explained that throughout the season, the team improved their technical skills while also encouraging each other and strengthening the team bond. There were team feeds held the night before matches and other team bonding activities where the girls became close friends with one another, motivating them to play better. Looking back on the season, there were many great matches played. Mandelkow said her favorite memory from the season was one of the triangulars the team participated in. “We were all so excited and supportive of each other and those matches played were fun, yet challenging.” She explained.
Throughout the season, the Bombers practiced after school working on technical skills and playing their teammates. Mandelkow commented on how she improved “by playing against the upperclassmen in practice.” She said her best match of the season was in a triangular against Farmington, where she won the first set, lost the second, and won the tie-breaking third set.
Overall, the season was full of wins and improvement for the Bombers. The Varsity tennis girls plan to work on their skills in the offseason in order to come back even stronger next season.
