The state weightlifting meet took place on March 7 in Cannon Falls, drawing fierce competition from schools such as Northfield, Lakeville South, and Moorhead. Despite the high level of talent, Cannon Falls athletes delivered an impressive performance, with four lifters earning first-place finishes and four more placing in the top three.
Junior Kallie Otto secured third place in the state and reflected on her experience, saying, “State is a great way to show how much effort you have put in throughout the season. Even though I didn’t do my best this year, I was still very happy that I had the opportunity.” Gold medalist Logan German also shared his excitement: “I’m very proud of myself for winning because I worked my absolute hardest for it.”
While Logan claimed a state title, his season is not over yet. He, along with teammates Zane Beck, Bea Wagner, Wyatt Nelson, Dana Barsness, and siblings Gunnar and Kaia Maki, will compete at nationals in Colorado Springs at the end of June. These athletes will represent Cannon Falls on the national stage, aiming to showcase the dedication and hard work they have put in all season. Coaches have high expectations and are confident their athletes’ perseverance will be reflected in their performances.
Unfortunately, standout lifter Dana Barsness will be unable to compete at nationals due to injury. Even so, she leaves behind an outstanding high school career. A multiple-time state champion and role model to younger athletes, Barsness has made a lasting impact on the program. When asked about the key to her success, she emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive attitude through challenges. “I will miss the encouraging environment and all the friends I made throughout my years in this sport,” she said. One word that defines her career is discipline.
As the season comes to a close, athletes like Kaia Maki and Bea Wagner continue preparing for nationals, while others begin looking ahead to next year. Early morning workouts and a strong team culture remain at the heart of the program. Whether competing or supporting from the sidelines, one thing is certain: Cannon Falls lifters are disciplined, and that will carry them far beyond this season.
