As the camera panned down Magnolia Lane and Jim Nantz’s soothing voice graced his audience’s ears, golf fans were once again brought into a tradition unlike any other. In which fans must be called patrons, the rough, the second cut, and the famous gift shop which makes $10 million per day.
The Masters started this year as always with the Par 3 Contest on Wednesday for the players and the kids. Like last year, spectators were charmed by Tommy Fleetwood’s son, Frankie, in his post round interview.
The tournament with the largest purse didn’t officially start until Thursday morning where this year’s honorary starters Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tom Watson started the tournament. Thursday’s first round ended with Rory McIlroy – last year’s champion – and Sam Burns tied for first place at 5 under par.
As everyone vied for a weekend finish, Rory McIlroy held onto his lead while breaking the 36 hole record at Augusta National with a combined score of 10 under. The rest of the top consisted of Sam Burns and Patrick Reed tied for second with a score of 6 under, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, and Jason Day rounded out the rest tied for fourth with a score of 5 under. Notably, Bryson Dechambeau did not make the cut this weekend, an event that drew questions from reporters on his use of 3D printed golf clubs.
Saturday and Sunday were full of excitement as Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number one golfer, shot a combined eleven under par to come in second. McIlroy held onto his lead to secure his second green jacket, becoming one of only four players to win The Masters in back to back years.
As the gates to Magnolia Lane closed and the final patrons left the grounds, Augusta National returned to its quiet beauty, only available to its 300 members. As fans wait another year to return to the greatest tradition in golf, one can only wonder who will next don the famous green jacket.
