Fall has arrived, and so has the 2024 tennis season. The Bomber tennis team is excited to be back and working hard towards a successful record. The team will be graduating one senior this year, Clara Wilson. As for the rest of the team, they are young and looking up to the senior and junior leaders.
This year’s varsity captains are Juniors Sophia Nerison and Josie Sjoquist. Their responsibilities as captains include being leaders and developing the bond of their team. They do this by hosting team feeds and running captain’s practices during the off-season. Nerison and Sjoquist provide a good attitude and mentality while leading by example for their teammates. Nerison says “The team chemistry is super strong” and she enjoys getting to know the younger players.
Practices for the Varsity tennis team begin with warmups and conditioning. Then the girls move into drills where they practice ground strokes, serves, and volleys. Singles and doubles players occasionally split up to work on game-like situations. They then finish out their practice with scrimmages against their teammates.
The Bombers just recently swept the Rochester Lourdes 7-0 for the first time in 30 years. Nerison says that was her favorite match because everyone was working hard and had good energy. The bomber tennis team will finish their Lourdes match on October 3rd, concluding their regular season play and beginning section matches.
Josie Sjoquist explains that “the team has high expectations for the postseason this year.” Sjoquist and the team see the State Tournament as a realistic expectation. The Bombers don’t know for sure but are predicting to be the two seed, playing Lake City in their first match and most likely Waseca in the final. The section semifinal and hopefully final will take place in Rochester at the Rochester Athletic Club on October 11th.
