The high school football season is now more than halfway through, and the Cannon Falls Bombers are currently 3-2. The Bombers beat Central High School 12-8 last Friday on Central’s Homecoming. The Bombers went into the game looking for revenge against the Raiders, who ended their season last year in the Section Championship.
The Bombers started the season with a 20-14 win in Randolph during the “Battle of Byllesby” against the Rockets. Sadly, the next week their record would become 1-1 after a 21-0 blowout to Rochester Lourdes; this was the first time that the Bombers had been shut out in 11 years.
With a Homecoming loss to Chatfield the following week, the team started with a losing record through the first three games.
After an hour and a half weather delay, the Bombers beat Kenyon-Wanamingo on September 19 to retain possession of the traveling trophy, the Little Brown Jug.
Although the Bombers currently have a winning record, many opposing teams had doubts about how good Cannon Falls would be going into the season due to the loss of so many seniors. Head Coach Dan Meyers had high praise for the team, saying, “We’ve done a great job of just learning the system, and adjusting to new guys in new positions.” Meyers went on to say that only a few offensive starters remained in their same positions as last year.
Before the season, the team captains had set the goal of winning the Section Championship this year and making a return to the State Championship. When asked about what he’s most excited for, senior captain and starting center James Huseth explained that he wanted to make it to state and, hopefully, a return trip to US Bank Stadium.
Huseth also said, “The team still needs to work on tackling,” when asked about what the team could improve on. Coach Meyers had a similar statement when asked, and said that physicality and playing big will be stressed more and more since the Bombers don’t have the size they have had in past years.
This Friday (10/3), the Bombers will travel to Goodhue to take on the Wildcats, who are currently 5-0. The Bombers will finish out their season with two home games, October 10th against Austin, which is Parents Night, and close out the regular season on Wednesday, October 15, against the Triton Cobras, which will be Senior Night.
