Though it may seem like all fun and games, listening to music, playing queen of the court, the JV tennis team put in hard work to get to the place where they ended the season. The 2025 varsity tennis team had a great season, and if they want to continue that success in the years to come, it is important for the JV program to thrive and work hard.
This year, the JV team had fourteen members: Allysa Burgess, Breanna Burgess, Addison Fox, Larissa Fredin, Anna Gore, Kayla Kiffmeyer, Aubrey Lee, Kaia Maki, Grace Otterness, Kallie Otto, Kinley Sheller, Avery Stark, Zoey Stiff, and Lola Winchell.
In past years, there had been a Varsity, JV, and junior high tennis team. This year, due to sixth graders not being able to participate in team sports, there were only a Varsity and a JV team. Because of the cut of a Junior high team, some middle schoolers got to play with older team members. The JV coach, Lindsay Reid, said, “Our JV tennis team finished the season with a strong 8-4 record.”
Most of the time, JV plays after Varsity has finished, which leaves a limited time for JV members to play, because not all courts have lights. Because of time restraints, that leaves lots of JV members playing doubles instead of singles, as doubles tend to finish faster than singles.
Eighth grader Addison Fox says that her favorite to play is “Singles, because you’re able to hit every shot by yourself, and it’s also easier because you’re not depending on someone else.” Fox says that Stewartville was her favorite match to play this year, because she and her doubles partner played a tiebreaker and won.
One point that Reid stressed was the positive energy of the team, and how everyone built each other up, and was very supportive of each other. Reid said, “I couldn’t be prouder of the growth, effort, and heart these players showed.” She also added that the tennis court was a safe space for everyone. “There’s no room for negativity or finger-pointing here. We show up, we work hard, we lift each other up, and we get better together. That’s the standard here.”
