American Beauty / American Psycho

CF Lantern reviews latest Fall out Boys album

American Beauty/American Psycho, Fall Out Boy’s most recent album, dropped earlier this year. Containing eleven songs, the album, from what we’ve heard, isn’t talked about too much, with the exception of the two popular “Centuries” and “Uma Thurman”. These two songs, with their catchy rhythms, landed daily spots on today’s hit radio stations. This album has its good songs, but it also seems to have a few that just aren’t Fall Out Boy. The band’s new sound is almost a little too different for fan’s preference on this album.

There are three songs that are clearly the best on the album. One of them would have to be “Irresistible” Though the original version is good, the recent addition of Demi Lovato to the song makes it much more exciting. “The Kids Aren’t Alright” is another song featured that shows a slower, more tame, side to the band. Lastly the song “Jet Pack Blues” has to be the best out of all eleven songs. Sounding similar to the song “Just One Yesterday,” featured on their previous album, this song has a true meaning and brings fans back to their previous sound. With the exception of these three, there are three that stand out as not fitting to Fall Out Boy’s real sound.

Not fitting the top three songs on the album, these three songs have one thing in common; they’re very repetitive. The song “Immortals”, featured on the recent movie “Big Hero 6”, is slightly annoying because of the weird background music. It gives off the impression that it was written quickly, just for the movie’s sake. “Uma Thurman” is one of the most catchy, yet overplayed songs on the album. Overall the song doesn’t have a true meaning behind it, just repetitive lyrics thrown together. The album titled song “American Beauty/American Psycho”, in our opinion is the worst on the album. With such obnoxious sounds, the song doesn’t blend together very well. Similar to “Immortals”, the song seems to be written quickly with no meaning.

Overall, this Fall Out Boy Album, compared to their last few, is the worst. Their previous albums actually seemed to be written with meaning behind the songs. Though the idea of music is changing quickly with more pop music showing up all the time, Fall Out Boy did not have to change to what the hit radio’s wanted. In the end, American Beauty/American Psycho has a completely different vibe than their usual sound, showing change isn’t always a good thing.
