As the 2024 baseball season kicks into gear, players on the Cannon Falls Bombers baseball team look back on their off-season participation. Every Monday and Wednesday morning during the winter, many players on the team participated in open gym, in the fieldhouse, where they worked on hitting off the pitching machine, tees, and throwing. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, baseball players in grades 9-12 went to the weight room after school to improve their strength and mobility.
During spring break, the Varsity team went to Vero Beach, Florida for a week and improved their baseball skills through a scrimmage, with lots of hitting and throwing practice. When asked what skills he improved in Florida, Junior Ethan Deutsch said some benefits from the trip were getting outside practices in and scrimmaging good teams. Other than practicing and playing, the team also enjoyed the nice weather which allowed them to practice outside, as well as team bonding.
After returning to Minnesota, the Bombers started practicing and played their first game of the season at John Burch Park against the Stewartville Tigers. Fast forward to their more recent games, the Varsity team is currently 12-10 overall on the season. They have played some good teams such as Pine Island who they have played two times this season. The Bombers have made many improvements overall by working hard at practice on their fielding technique and getting more consistent at the plate.
They started their playoff games after their final regular season game against Winona Cotter on Saturday, May 18th. Up to this point so far, the Bombers are undefeated in their postseason games. They played Chatfield at home in the first round and won 10-2. They then traveled to Caledonia and played a close game where the score ended up being 4-2. On Monday, May 27 they took on the Pine Island Panthers and won 8-3. The Bombers had many great hits against the Panthers, including Junior Preston Schoenfelder’s home run. The Bombers will play Zumbrota-Mazeppa — who they have already played twice — at Mayo Field on Saturday at 10 am. Their playoff games have drawn a great crowd so far, which will continue to catapult them to another win on Saturday.
