It’s Wednesday at 6:45 in the morning and Mrs. Miller is working hard to teach her Mathletes a tenth-grade level math problem. Elliot Iverson raised her hand to ask a question. “How do you solve 5 to the power of 128?” Mrs. Miller went through every step to teach the tips and tricks on how to solve it quickly and efficiently. After a little bit of hard work and thinking, Elliot’s hand shot up, she said the answer, and it was correct.
The Cannon Falls Middle school Math league team just started back up again for the 2024-2025 season. This year the coach is Mrs. Miller and it is her third season as their coach. Their team so far this year consists of six eighth graders, three seventh graders, and a large group of sixth graders. Mrs. Miller has high hopes for this year. She said “We “graduated” some strong students last year but luckily we have six strong eighth graders to lead the team, and I hope it’s a great year.” The middle school math league is looking for more seventh graders to join the team. Mrs. Miller said “We are still working on the seventh graders still, as there are only three of them.” Most of the kids in there think that if someone is considering joining, they definitely should.
Some of the seventh and eighth graders like Lola Winchell and Elliot Iverson have been in math league for two years, while Axel Lundell and Henry Flodeen have participated three years. This is the final year of middle school Math for eighth graders Henry Flodeen, Elliot Iverson, Jacob Olsen, Anya Nygaard, Axel Lundell, and Gabriel Bauch. Some of the seventh and eighth graders have set goals, such as Lola Winchell who said “I hope to continue to get better this year, the math that we do is really hard, and I hope I’m able to get more questions right than I did last year, which will reflect on how well my team does.”If someone was thinking about joining it in middle school, Elliot Iverson said “ I would recommend joining because it’s just math and a lot of fun because we do math and joke around,” and Henry Flodeen said “It is a good way to practice math and can get you going if you are playing on joining the high school math league team.” Everyone in math league thinks it is fun and they enjoy it.
If someone was ever thinking about joining math league they definitely should especially if they are a seventh graders as there aren’t many seventh graders. Everyone who is in math league has a good fun time and helps them grow as learners. It is fun and they meet every Wednesday morning at 6:45 AM.
