“Mine!” called Lizzie Tipton when she was going for the ball as it was passed over the net by one of her teammates. The 7th-grade girl’s volleyball team has won 11 games this year and only lost three. They still have more games to go before the end of the season nears. It’s important to get girls to join volleyball so the program can have bigger numbers for future years.
The Cannon Falls 7th grade volleyball team is a team of sixteen. The roster for the team is Lillian Olund, Bella Boyum, Lydia Samuelson, Lizzie Tipton, Ruby Kyrra, Kaitlyn Kapp, Karina Jandro, Brekkyn Ayres, Allison Hernandez Lopez, Krista Erlanson, Khlaya Silva, Paige Thompson, Madelyn Thompson, Lila Olson, Kayla Kiffmeyer, and London Bentzin. Their team was on a winning streak of five but then lost one game at their tournament in Triton which made them start over. They quickly started winning more games after the loss at the tournament and are now on a winning streak of eight games.
One might see the 7th-grade girls dressing up for random days during the school year. When they have home games, the girls like to dress up for the occasion on the day of their match. However, it could also just be another high school team dressing up for their games. Speaking of dressing up, the 7th grade team has two jerseys: one red and one black. The jerseys this year are new too and the girls really like them. Their opinions vary on what jersey they like better, so the 7th-grade coach gets to decide on what one they wear for the next game or tournament.
The 7th-grade girl’s volleyball team has played and either won or lost in plenty of games this year so far. Their first game was against Chatfield, which “…was a pretty bad defeat”, said Lillian Olund, a left-side hitter on the team. Ever since that first Chatfield game, they have lost a few more but have also learned how to become more of a team, how to communicate better, make more of their serves, get a perfect pass to set it up, and many more. They have also been on a winning streak because of their improvements and teamwork leading up to the games.
The 7th-grade boys have also been an aspect of the girls. The boys wish them good luck before some of the games and they’ve shown up to a few games as well. They also learned a few cheers by watching the girls and cheered for them on for one of their games against Randolph, a team that the girls have played three times now this year. “I like to watch them play volleyball because it’s fun watching them win,” said Mikko Otterness, one of the boys who watches and supports the girls at their games.
The girls have tried hard this year to work as a team with how many people they have. Bella Boyum says “When it comes to working together with our big team, we are really good at it.” Some girls are also trying out volleyball this year for the first time and are having a really good time this year so far. This is good for getting high numbers of players for future years, as they may spread their opinions to others. Students should join volleyball, as it’s a fun and learning experience for them.
