Business professionals of Cannon Falls
Eight Cannon Falls students competed in BPA state on March 25
Business suits with tight ties and skirts with clicking heels roamed the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Minneapolis March 23rd through the 25th. Dressed so professionally were high schoolers from all around the state that qualified to compete at the state contest for Business Professionals of America, an extracurricular activity aimed towards preparing today’s students to become tomorrow’s business leaders. This year eight ladies from Cannon Falls had the opportunity to spend the weekend demonstrating their business skills in their specific categories. These categories vary from speeches about proper workplace protocol to more graphic showcases like videos or graphic designs promoting a business, there are even plain old tests that people can choose to take.
The News Broadcast Team: Amanda Wulf, Bobbi Cromer and Amanda Holscher poured in hours of hard work starting all the way back around October, executing service projects, filming, and editing. Closer to the competition and all the way up until mere hours prior to their go time, they rehearsed their presentation religiously. Like all the old sayings, their hard work paid off the following day when they were awarded 1st place. The three thrilled seniors each received a medal along with a team trophy, and the chance to compete at the national competition that will be held in May in Orlando, Florida. The Administrative Support Team: Anja Black, Breanna Sandstrom, Alese Bentson, and Kaitlin Otterness, had a very rich bond, all the team members were happy-go-lucky and that positive energy was enough for them to be considered finalists, ending up in the top 10. Chase Schaefer opted for a solo event, Human Resources Management. With a go with the flow vibe similar to the the Administrative Support Team, her speech landed her in 14th place.
Advisor for Cannon Falls BPA and business class teacher at Cannon Falls High School, Mr. Junker, organized the details and accompanied the girls to the competition. When surrounded by students and teachers from other schools active in BPA, it seems as if the Cannon Falls team kind of sticks out. This is because they focus on enjoying the experience rather than the seriousness. The balance between effort and enjoyment as well as how well the team gets along is what makes BPA at Cannon Falls unique. From his three years as a BPA coach, this is the first time he’s had national qualifiers. From his experience though, just from participating in BPA he believes teens gain “the ability to get up in front of people and talk” but in a more laid back and less intimidating way than Speech or Debate.
After completing the events the rest of the weekend was filled with fun. There were ample restaurants that were within walking distance to choose from for lunch and dinner, a fitness center in the hotel, and BPA provided entertainment which included a talent show and professional hypnotist. With suits and skirts packed away and in the comfort of casual clothes, the competitors were able to explore and relish in the excitement surrounding them.
