Mentally preparing herself for the grueling soccer game ahead of her, Jordan realizes she forgot to bring a snack. She knows she’ll regret buying Doritos, or any junk food for that matter. Wanting something that will restore her stamina and not drag her down, she considers her options. All of a sudden, she remembers the school’s newest addition.

This year, a healthy vending machine has been installed near the fieldhouse. Stocked with items like Naked juice, Go-Go Squeeze applesauce, and Baked Lay’s, it was strategically placed there to catch the eyes of the afternoon rush. The location was chosen because of its proximity to the fieldhouse and the weight room, where people commonly work out. It’s also convenient for those who frequently walk around the school. Wendy Robinson, Head Cook at CFHS describes the vendor as “something extra, a snack that the kids could have all the time. It’s a smart snack and people do get hungry.” Opening at 3:30 p.m., the vending machine stays on until the morning.

Food at CFHS is transforming. Students who rely on vending machines for their afternoon snack should be aware of the large amount of calories and fat grams are packed into the small refreshment. Items like Doritos, Peanut M&M’s, Cheeto’s, and Corn Nuts all range from 250-500 calories, as stated by the United States Department of Agriculture. Since the U.S. is leaning towards a healthier future, the school is cutting calories. Anything under 200 calories has been removed. Adding a healthier vending machine has been part of the transformation.

Holly Winget, a reputable english teacher at CFHS, thinks that it is unlikely that the other teachers and staff members will use the new vending machine. When asked why, she responds “We are actually trained to to bring our own snacks and put our own healthy stuff in our bags, instead of going to a vending machine.” Smiling, she adds, “when we do crave a snack, we crave Snicker bars.” As for the location of this new vendor, she exclaims that it is “off in neverland,” and that more advertising is needed.

The school hopes the healthy snacks will be as big as a success as the milk machine. Students should to start choosing nutritious foods, and begin making it a habit.

Later that day, Jordan made spectacular 20 saves in the goal. She mentally thanked herself for buying SkinnyPop popcorn, which gave her an extra boost of energy.
