Review of the first half of the CFHS girls’ soccer season

Basics. Coach Davisson preaches the basics to her girls soccer team. “We gotta get better at dribbling, making turns, communicating,” all of which are essential for every team to succeed, hence the term fundamentals. The Varsity girls have had a rough start. They are winless but Coach Davisson looks beyond wins when it comes to success. At Schaeffer Academy, one of the referees came over after the game and complimented the team on their sportsmanship and support of each other. Davisson wants her players to “keep it in perspective.” She wants her players to value character and better themselves not only in the sport of soccer but also in the way they conduct themselves. She wants her players to keep plugging at their turns, their dribbling, their traps but also their support, their ethicality, and their sportsmanship. Even though it can be frustrating to lose, losing their heads would only makes things worse.

The team has shown improvement. The team looks like a more cohesive unit when they play, although they sorely miss veteran goalie Jordan Kasa who graduated last year. The same situation occurred last year with the boys team when they lost Levi Prestigard; they looked better but the outcomes were still the same. It’s a phase, the teams Cannon Falls plays have many more years of experience in every position. Time will come when Cannon too, has years or even a decade of experience in each of their players. For now, the basics are the best option for the teams to practice if they want to see results. After all, a builder can’t do his/her job if he/she has no foundation.
