College Crossroads
As Mikaela walked through the guidance office looking at the walls plastered with college posters, a question drifted through her mind concerning what the differences are between public and private universities. Since Mikaela and many other students have asked this critical question, the lantern has chosen to investigate what the differences truly are.
In order to answer those questions the lantern was in correspondence with Karen Backes, Dean of Admission at St. Benedict/St. John’s University (Private), and Sue Eckerson, Assistant Admissions Director, at Winona State University (Public.).
When talking to both chosen university representatives the main question asked was their professional opinion on what the difference actually is between private and public. Interestingly both responses were very similar. Eckerson replied, “There isn’t much difference honestly. Except the price tag on the door and diversity.” They both mentioned that they wanted to make it clear that although they work at a public or private college they fully believe that the student feeling like they fit and feel comfortable was really the philosophy they want to push the most. They want upcoming adults to fully enjoy their academic experience.
