Governor Tim Walz gives one of his daily press conferences to keep Minnesotans updated during Covid-19 chaos.

On Monday, March 30, Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, informed in his daily press conference that ten Minnesotans have died because of the Coronavirus. In addition, he announced that there have been 576 confirmed cases of the virus in Minnesota so far.

To help slow the spread of COVID-19, Gov. Walz issued a stay at home order at the end of last week. Although this 2-week-long order is inconvenient for most, it does have some advantages other than just simply fighting this pandemic. Since people are only allowed to leave their homes to purchase the bare essentials, or for work purposes, traffic has significantly decreased. During his call, Gov. Walz stated that “According to the Department of Public Safety, in the month of March, traffic flow was down 71 percent in rural/greater Minnesota, and 79 percent in the metro area.”

Another topic he talked about during his daily briefing was the COVID-19 assistance package that he signed this past weekend. According to Gov. Walz, this package “includes peacetime emergency childcare grants, assistance for our veterans, supports food banks and homeless shelters, support for small businesses, and extends disaster assistance to farmers.” Essentially, this bill will provide $330 million worth of aid to combat the COVID-19 crisis.

Executive Order 20-14 is another way that Gov. Walz is working to relieve the stress during these hard times. This order puts a hold on evictions. To prevent people from taking advantage of this situation, Gov. Walz emphasized in his call on Monday that people who can pay should do so. If anyone is actually struggling to make payments they should communicate with their landlords or the Department of Human Services.

Gov. Walz also mentioned in his conference call that he has spoken with President Trump, Vice President Pence, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and other fellow governors about the Coronavirus. Throughout their meeting, they came up with a goal. He stated that “There is a refocused effort on trying to partner with the states to get the critical infrastructure to us.”
