If you could hear what the Deadpool & Wolverine movie looks like, you could smell how good it is. For real, one of the best things to come out of this year is the Deadpool & Wolverine movie. It’s classic Deadpool, with modern references and humor. With a phenomenal script so good it seems ad-libbed, a mix of genres, and characters to unhang your spurs and get in a minivan for, Deadpool & Wolverine is the movie of the summer, and then some.
As with any Deadpool movie, Deadpool & Wolverine is as much comedy as it is action. However, it is also a world-saving story about Wade Wilson (Deadpool). After being rejected by the Avengers, Wilson eventually settles as a car salesman, and as fun as watching him trash on Honda Odysseys is, there was not enough mixed martial arts and liberal use of firearms and melee weapons for the movie to continue. This is remedied, starting with the TVA’s arrest of Wilson. While in TVA custody, Wilson learns that Wolverine’s death on Earth-616 (the main Avengers universe) is causing the timeline to fall apart. After Wilson escapes custody with violence and his Deadpool suit, he traverses other universes, searching for a different Wolverine to replace the one that Deadpool’s world lost.
Throughout the adventure, Deadpool & Wolverine blends multiple genres flawlessly. Of course, it is a comedy movie, but that does not mean that it isn’t action. In fact, leaning into the comedic aspect of the movie allows Deadpool & Wolverine to achieve awe-inspiring choreography that is both intense and humorous, with incredible consistency at many points in the movie. Again, the comedy doesn’t subtract from the action, and the action certainly doesn’t diminish the comedy. Both aspects work together to create a cinema experience that is hard to rival. However, Deadpool & Wolverine is also a heartwarming tale of Wilson finding his place in life, with a dialogue at the end that is surprisingly wholesome, yet undeniably Deadpool.
Beyond Deadpool, there are characters in Deadpool that have not been seen in years. Gambit, Cassandra Nova, Blade, X-23, and other lesser-known IPs all made appearances in the most recent installment of Deadpool, and to see their characters in the limelight is nothing short of wonderful. These characters were awesome on their own, but what made them MARVELous (Deadpool-esque pun) was the script. With timely (or not-so-timely) references to current events, perfect delivery, and a plotline to keep it all synthesized, Deadpool & Wolverine does not disappoint with writing and acting. And of course, the 4th wall breaks were on point as always.
An instant classic, Deadpool & Wolverine is undoubtedly the movie of the summer. It’s not as epic as Avengers: Endgame, or as funny as a classroom clock falling off the wall, but it does combine at least 90% of each, with maximum effort. It can be seen, heard, possibly felt, probably tasted, and maybe even smelled how outstanding this film is.
