Defiance
A novel by C. J. Redwine
In the city of Baalboden, women are expected to conform to the wishes of their male protectors. However, Rachel Adams is different. Educated secretly by her father, Rachel is able to read, fight, and survive in the wilderness. She has a fierce personality and while other women listen to the rules, she disobeys. When Rachel’s father, Jared, fails to return from a mission in the wasteland, she is given a new protector, Logan. Even though he was Jared’s old apprentice, Logan has no idea how to provide for a teenage girl, barely younger than himself.
Rachel’s outspoken and direct personality makes this book entertaining. Instead of being a prim and proper woman, she is very bold and untamed. I loved how she was so different from everyone else. The author throws unexpected events at the characters which makes this book intriguing.
Even after hours of reading, I had a hard time putting this book down. C. J. Redwine does a phenomenal job at portraying characters’ loyalty throughout every chapter. The main character is a rebellious teen who is so eager to help others, yet she isn’t allowed to do so because she is a girl. I enjoyed reading how Redwine portrayed the feelings of women who had no rights. Even though she is facing loss herself, Rachel pushes through many obstacles making this book unique and unforgettable.
