Boys soccer closes out season two with improvements

Field of dreams

Goooooooooooooal!!! The other boys of fall were back this season for a second helping of quite possibly the second-most fashionable illness of the year: football fever. In their second of two trial years, the Bomber Boys’ Soccer team returned to play with a rejuvenated schedule and determination.

With games once again played at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the team enjoyed a steady home attendance, along with an extremely dedicated fanbase at away matches. With spectators donning lawn chairs for bleachers, and a crop field literally ten yards from the end of play, home varsity soccer matches take on somewhat of a “Field of Dreams” feel to them. (Minus the stadium lights–and 1920s baseball players–and Kevin Costner. )

The team took its knocks again this year, facing several solid programs on their way to a 2-9-0 regular season finish, and eventual first round playoff loss to a very strong Austin side. Scoring in nearly every match however, the team’s flourishing morale never dipped; their grain of salt record never triggering saltiness of attitude.

Graduating almost all of last year’s varsity squad, the team looked to its younger players to step up, as well as players green to the game. Featuring many new faces in its lineup, the team played progressively better throughout the year, as players began to regain previous form and capitalize on the fundamental skills provided by Head Coach Adam Rueger.  As passing and defending improved over the course of the season, so too did communication, a vital element of soccer and on field rapport. “We really did have a great season this year; bringing in a bunch of new guys and getting into some close matches really made the whole experience awesome,” praises Junior Captain Max Rueger. “If anyone has thought about possibly joining in the past and never got around to it, it’s never too late. You won’t regret it.”
