October is a time for scary things, seeing as Halloween is at the end of the month. Many will partake in festive things like going to haunted houses, pumpkin patches, or maybe an apple orchard. Others who like to stay inside might watch scary movies like the Scream franchise or Halloween. Sometimes, people don’t want to watch classic horror movies, wanting something newer. If they want something newer, they could look into the series “FROM,” a unique combination of science fiction and horror, making it different from the typical horror shows.
It takes place in a nightmarish town somewhere in the United States, which fans named FROMville. In the show, there is no real name for it, and is referred to simply as “The Town.” The town is divided into two sections: The Town and Colony House. A few days after someone comes into the town, they choose between the two. The Colony House has its own set of rules and live separate from the town. In this town, there are humanoid monsters that come out at night, attacking anyone they see. The easiest way to identify these creatures is by their unnerving, unnatural smile. Because of these monsters, self-appointed sheriff and major leader in the town Boyd Stevens made a rule that everyone has to stay inside at night, placing talismans at their front door to keep them safe.
Boyd Stevens, played by Harold Perrineau, is one of the show’s main characters. Obviously, there are many other main characters, prominent ones being Tabitha and Jim Matthews played by Catlino Sandino Moreno and Eion Bailey, Jade Herrera played by David Alpey, Dona Raines played by Elizabeth Sanders, Tien-Chen Liu played by Elizabeth Moy, and Kenny Liu played by Ricky He.
Tabitha and Jim Matthews, along with Jade Herrera are newcomers in the town, the show following them and how they try to leave. Donna Raines is in charge of Colony House and works closet with Boyd. Kenny Liu is the deputy of the town and looks up to Boyd. His mother Tien-Chen Liu runs the diner in town, feeding everyone who lives in the town.
Actress Elizabeth Moy made a celebration for the premiere on Instagram, creating a “Pancake Premiere Party” for fans to partake in by posting their own pancakes with the hashtag “FROMily.” Also on Instagram, the official FROM account has begun to post and is still posting, asking for theories on what will happen next, what something means, which characters will survive, and which will not.
Fans have said they enjoy the show because of how it differs from the majority of horror shows with its sci-fi twist. Fans have also shown major excitement for the new season as it is being released, some even saying MGM+ should release it all at once instead of one episode every Sunday. While it’s doubtful that could happen, the show posting sneak peeks of what happens next on social media is sure to make fans happy.
As episodes are released and fans are kept on the edge of their seats, MGM+’s FROM slowly becomes more popular, and more creepy. While most people love terrifying horror movies and shows during the month of October, some people like the more subtly scary shows. If the need for something right in between those two categories arises, FROM is a great place to start.
