Galloping Gourmets – hoppin’ down to the Lily Pad(io)
The Lantern food review team takes on a popular pub in Northfield
Arriving in Northfield, we were shocked to see that the restaurant, Froggy Bottoms, looked empty, leading us to think it was closed. After closely inspecting the building, we then realized that the real party was downstairs of an old brick building. A rustic steel spiral staircase led us to an Irish styled pub packed with locals. Not only was the place hoppin’, the food was some of the best we’ve had in awhile.
A peppy waitress greeted us and we were then given a menu full of a variety of options. From wraps and salads, to fun appetizers and pasta, it was difficult to decide what we would devour that night. We, the galloping gourmets, and our good friend, Matt, carefully decided on a few dishes. First, Kelli decided to sink her teeth into one of her favorite meals, a wrap. The sweet chili chicken wrap was definitely pleasing. Savory sauce, greens, mozzarella, and onions were followed by cucumbers; something Kelli was hesitant about finding in a wrap. Surprisingly, the cucumber gave the wrap a nice light crunch. Matt also tried a wrap, but his was a chicken ranch style. Our friend was delighted with his choice as it contained mozzarella, bacon, lettuce, and of course ranch. He exclaimed that the dish had an equal amount of flavor from all the ingredients, and nothing was too overpowering. Sadie went for a saltier route and scoped out some appetizers. Cheese curds and fries seemed like the perfect choice for a Friday night. The cheddar curds were perfectly fried, but the fries were anything but special. Though they were good, they could’ve used some extra pizzaz.
After our filling meals, we decided to exit onto the patio, called the Lily Padio, which overlooked the Cannon River. The view was just beautiful and on a sunny summer day, this would totally be the local hot spot. Overall we are very pleased with our findings. We will give this bar a well deserved 9.5. This underground pub ended up being very worthwhile.
