We have a fairly good understanding of our speech and topic

— Rodrick Reardon

After countless hours of preparation, the Cannon Falls We The People Team is ready to head off to their competition. Each of the six units will compete on Tuesday, December 11th, at the state capitol for a chance to move onto the national contest. All six units needed to create two speeches based off questions given to them by the Minnesota division of We the People. Questions ranged from the constitutionality of certain laws, to how to fix the US immigration policy. After delivering their four minute speeches, the units then go into a 6 minute questioning period.
Roderick Reardon, who is partnered with Riley Meyers and Chris Modrak in Unit 4, stated that he feels prepared for the competition. “We have a fairly good understanding of our speech and topic, but my main concern is the randomness of the questioning period and the slight fear of not knowing what to expect.” Reardon also stated that he has learned a little bit from preparing for the competition. “I feel like I’m part of something bigger than just learning about politics. I’ve been able to use skills and knowledge that I’ve acquired throughout my high school career and solve the problems that have been given to us.”
