The wrestling team is now well into their season, and has been having a fun year both on and off the mat. Their team has a mix of key returners and some new faces, giving them a solid foundation, but also some new wrestlers to work with. As their season is heading towards its end, many are also anticipating section matches and playoffs.
Last season, wrestling individuals had tons of success, and many have returned this season. State participants Tristan Zingler, Griffin Peterson, Adam Parish, and Owen Parish are among their roster this season, with both Parish brothers placing third at state last year. Their success has set the tone for this year and led to some lofty goals. Freshman wrestler Owen Parish states that his main individual goal for the season is to not only get back to the state tournament, but also “to win state.”
This year’s team is characterized by their overall bond and the fun they have, while also being able to focus on their goals. This bond is considered one of their main strengths, as senior Monette Otterness says, “they are really close with each other inside and outside of wrestling,” which is crucial to a successful team. However, even with some new additions to the team, they’re still having some trouble, as Parish states they “can’t fill out a lineup” and believes this is their main weakness as a team. The team does have a common goal, though, and it is to simply “wrestle the best we can,” as described by junior Griffin Peterson. With this mentality, the team should show growth in both mindset and skills as the season progresses.
With under a month left in the regular season, the most exciting part of the year starts, the playoffs. Many wrestlers are excited for both sections and potentially the state. Peterson even states that he is “most excited for sections.” With such strong individuals this season, it should be fun to watch.
