After a rough start to the season the Bomber Varsity Baseball team is halfway through and looking to finish strong.
The outlook for the Cannon Falls Bombers Varsity baseball team is bright, after losing their first three games the team has bounced back, winning their last six games. Most of last year’s team, who made it to the section finals, have returned and hope to make a run to state this year. Being led by seniors Jack Meyers, Ethan Deutsch, Magnus Swanson, Ethan Albers, Caiden Huebsch, and Preston Schoenfelder, the team has a positive outlook on the rest of the season.
After the first half of the season, Coach Bucky Lindow expressed that “the season didn’t start the way [they] wanted it to as we lost our first three games.” The Bombers have turned it around since then though, winning six straight games.
Coach Lindow also stated that a strong point so far has been pitching. The pitchers for the Bombers threw a combined 15-inning stretch with no earned runs. This stretch included a 15-3 win over PEM that was a no-hitter, PEM only scored off of walks. Sophomore catcher Charlie Rustad agreed that pitching has been a strong point due to future Division 2 pitcher Jack Meyers and St. Thomas commit Ryan Hjellming.
Excluding the 15-run game, hitting and scoring runs has been a weak point so far Coach Lindow mentioned. He added that so far there has been an emphasis on having quality at-bats, and it will be a focus for the remainder of the season.
A bright point for the Bombers is senior Preston Schoenfelder; to this point, Schoenfelder has been a reliable lead off hitter. Coaches and teammates alike have said that he has been a solid hitter as well as outfielder. Another player highlighted was sophomore pitcher and third baseman Tyler Meyers, younger brother of senior Jack Meyers. Coach Lindow had high praise for him saying that he has been a good defenseman, pitcher, and hitter so far this season.
In addition to Schoenfelder’s hitting, Coach Bucky Lindow reached an exciting milestone in his coaching career. The Bombers took down the Goodhue Wildcats on Monday April, 14th, winning eleven to three. The win against the Wildcats marked Coach Lindow’s 400th career win, an impressive number for the long-time coach.
The Bombers currently have a record of six wins and three losses. In addition to the varsity team, the JV team has found success, as they are currently undefeated. This week the Bombers will face the Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars and Randolph Rockets.
