The girl’s basketball team has struggled in recent years, never reaching more than five wins a season. However, this year they are coached by Michael Gunderson, who is also the Cannon Falls softball coach. Under his direction, the girls really jumped on the winning bandwagon with a 2 and 3 record early in the season. Sadly, this bandwagon faltered and the girls now have a 4-15 record. The Bomber girls are a part of one of the toughest leagues in the conference and each game comes with different tasks. Yet compared to last year the girls have made major improvements, but sometimes the outcome doesn’t always showcase their hard work. Captain Grace Rutter states “This season has been filled with new opportunities. Each game we go out on the court working hard and doing the things we do best, but sometimes it just doesn’t go in our favor and we don’t get the win.” The other three captains are Ashly Serres, Hailey Huseth, and Callie Loeschke.

The winter hoopsters are short on numbers and are a relatively young team. Only two seniors returned this year, along with four letterwinners from last season. The good news with such a small squad is that the players receive more playing time which helps the girls focus on fundamentals of the game.  “Even though we don’t have as many people as most other teams do,” Rutter adds, “We work just as hard as them and we deserve to win just like they do.” The team hasn’t had the record they had hoped for, but their effort has not been shorted. With only three games left in the season, the girls are hopeful that the dedication will start to show not only to the fans but also on the scoreboard.
