Ghost stories have been around for a long time, and they have taken on many different forms. From movies to books, and scary to funny, these ghostly tales have always been a favorite around Halloween. Recently, Disney released a remake of its movie The Haunted Mansion. The new Haunted Mansion movie is a perfect combination of humor with some horror.
Ben Matthias, a former astrophysicist, was hired to take photos at the haunted Gracy Manor. During his career, Ben created a camera that can see ghosts. When Ben arrived at the mansion, he met Gabbie and her son Travis, who recently moved into the paranormal home. He soon learned that anyone who enters the mansion and tries to leave will be haunted by one of its many ghosts until they return. With the help of a psychic, a professor, and a priest; Gabbie, Ben, and Travis uncover the secrets surrounding the haunted mansion.
Haunted Mansion is the second film adaptation of Disney’s The Haunted Mansion ride. It was released in July of 2023, while the original was released in November of 2003. Although it’s labeled as a horror and fantasy movie, Haunted Mansion is not very scary. There are some sad and frightening scenes, but it’s primarily a comedic movie. A few familiar faces from both the ride and the first movie adaptation return in Haunted Mansion, including the famous medium, or person who can communicate with spirits, Madame Leota. The Hatbox Ghost, a character from The Haunted Mansion ride, and Edward Gracey, the original owner of the mansion, both make an appearance in the new movie. However, Haunted Mansion has very few similarities to the original 2003 movie overall. Most of the characters are new and the storyline is completely different. One thing that’s better about the new Haunted Mansion is that it gives much more background information about the house and its former owners.
Haunted Mansion is a typical ghost movie, but it does have some unique qualities. Compared to the original movie, the music and special effects are much better. The scenes with the ghosts looked really cool, and it would have been nice to see more of them. Another thing that was interesting was how the characters interacted with each other. With the odd assortment of people trapped in the mansion, there were many entertaining moments. Despite some of the negative feedback that Haunted Mansion received, I thought that it was an enjoyable movie. Combining the sad and scary elements with a little humor was definitely my favorite aspect of the movie. Haunted Mansion is great for anyone who wants to watch something that’s more funny over scary, or anyone looking for a new ghost movie to watch.
