In September, a junior class 5k was held to raise money for 2016 prom. Unfortunately, the turnout didn’t go as planned. Later a poll was taken and the participants, the junior and senior classes, were asked if they plan on going to prom or not. Out of 59 juniors, 30 said yes and 29 said no. The senior class was a different story altogether. 53 seniors partook in the poll, resulting in 40 students who plan on going and only 13 who decided they were going to skip out on the festivities. This data proves that prom is primarily the seniors’ night to shine and not the juniors.
The truth is, not all juniors want to go to prom. They still have another year. Besides, going both years would ruin the magic of senior prom. Even after considering this, the junior class is still charged with fundraising for a prom most don’t even want to attend. The number of juniors who were involved with the 2015 5k , meaning they volunteered or raised money, was only 27 out of a class of 90. They wouldn’t care if “ The students had nowhere to go but the gym and had to enjoy a sumptuous fare of mr. rib on a bun, tangy peaches, a mouth-watering salad, and an icy cold milk, while also listening to the sensational musical stylings of Mrs.Giese on the beatbox.” -Robin Nelson. But, if the juniors shouldn’t be in charge of fundraising, who should?
This conundrum can be solved simply by instituting an elected prom committee. The prom committee would be responsible with fundraising and planning for prom. People on the committee could get other prom goers to help fundraise by offering a discount on their prom ticket or other incentives if they get a certain amount of donations. Another possibility is to use concessions as another way to gather money. Students could volunteer and all of the money would go towards helping fund for prom. That way, no one would have to fundraise if they didn’t want to and everyone could walk away happy. This year the fundraiser has left all parties despondent.
Every year the junior class fundraiser is a 5K run/walk. Unfortunately, the class of 2017 was an utter disappointment. Only 27 students bothered to fundraise and just $3,000 was raised out of the $10,000 that is needed to provide for prom. The 63 who did not participate in any part of the 2015 Bomber 5K will have to partake in paying dues, which adds up to $35 per person. 90% of the funds from the fundraiser go towards prom and the other 10% goes towards senior activities. Due to the results from this year’s fundraiser, there clearly should be some changes involved to how prom is fundraised.
