The crack of the bat, the cheers from the dugout, and the cleats clicking on the ground can only mean one thing – the Cannon Falls Bombers are back on the field and ready to make this season memorable. The 8th-grade boys’ baseball season has begun and is already off to a great start. One of the pitchers on the team, Mayson Vogel, says, “I feel confident in our team’s abilities even though we had a rough start at things, but I feel we can pick it up going forward.”
Consisting of 12 players, new and returning, they are building strong team chemistry as well as learning their strengths and weaknesses. One player noted that they struggle with fielding the most, but on the other hand, are very successful in batting. The practice schedule consists of daily practices Monday through Friday, usually having one game a week. During these practices, they are focused on improving their skills and learning how to become the players they set out to be. Players mentioned they usually do fielding progressions, hitting drills, and pick-off moves.
Every team has different goals and expectations for its future. When asked about their individual goals, one player, Kason Lindahl, stated: “My goal is to keep a good strike-to-ball ratio and be consistent with my pitching.” Another teammate, Aiden Shorter Johnson, mentioned: “Our team goal is to keep winning games and become a better team in general.” As the season continues, they are filled with excitement for what is to come. Ready to put in the work, the players are thriving in perseverance and determination.
Off-season training is a big part of in-season success. Whether it’s through other sports or on their own, these players have been preparing long before starting the season. “During preseason, I typically do batting and fielding drills,” Carter Stay said when asked how he prepares. They are hoping their hard work will pay off in the end.
With every practice and game, they are constantly gaining new strategies and mindsets to make this season memorable. “I’m excited to see where the rest of the season goes, and I am hopeful it will turn out good,” player Ethan Johnson added. As the season progresses, they are making the most of every opportunity that comes their way.
