While traditional jazz instruments are preferred, other instruments can also be played in Jazz Band.

On December 2, 2021, the Cannon Falls High School’s Jazz Band met for the first time this year. Jazz Band was severely hindered through last year between the hybrid schedule and quarantined students, but in this new school year, the band is ready for a revival. The Jazz Band met at 7:00 A.M. and plans on meeting at the same time each Thursday, with occasional Monday dates. Mike Legvold, the band director, offers extra credit class points and lettering points for members of the Jazz Band.

Traditionally, Jazz Bands consist of trumpets, saxophones, trombones, bass, piano, drums, and guitar. The band has sheet music parts for all instruments in their possession, so even flutes, clarinets, and other instruments can join too. The Jazz Band is dependent on several of each instrument (some more than others) to join to create a full sound for performing.

The Jazz Band will perform at the “Slice of Jazz” in March and May. Musicians that aren’t in band can contact Legvold if they also want to participate in Jazz Band. All high school musicians in band are welcome to join at any time, but preferably sooner than later, for extra credit and fun.
