The Bomber Cross Country season has officially run out. The team did not have any runners advance past sections, but it was a successful season nonetheless.
Last year the Bombers hosted their first home meet in many years, and this season they continued on, hosting a meet on October 1st at the Cannon Falls Fairgrounds. At the Bomber’s home meet, numerous runners had notable times, some setting season records and some setting all time personal records. Runners that set personal records at the meet include Wyatt Nelson, Breck Rustad, and Monette Otterness. There were five runners who set season records at the home meet, one of them being Senior Captain Isaac Anderson who mentioned that the home meet was his favorite of the season.
Anderson was a captain for the team this year, along with Samuel Wagenknecht who is also a Senior. The two captains have been running buddies in practices and meets for the past four years. Anderson explained that they “pushed each other during practice and even harder at our cross-country meets.” Although Anderson and Wagenknecht have a strong bond, Anderson mentioned he will miss the lowerclassmen that he has made memories with over the years. Like Anderson, Wagenknecht is also going to miss hanging out with the team but he will also miss hanging out with runners from other teams.
From coach Brett Zimmerman’s perspective, “watching these kids push themselves and possibly realizing the potential they have inside” is his favorite part of coaching. Zimmerman also added that the highlight of the season for him was “the boys team placing ahead of Randolph 2 out of 3 meets contested.”
The Bombers Cross Country team has very low numbers, and has for years, so consistency in their runners is important. Coach Zimmerman mentioned that Senior Isaac Anderson and Sophomore Lucy Lindahl were the most consistent runners for the boys and girls teams respectively. Although consistency is important, every runner matters for the Bombers with low numbers on both the boys and girls sides. Having a small team comes with a different kind of dynamic but Wagenknecht explained “I can’t describe the team dynamic since it was never really consistent, but that made it fun.”
Despite the Bombers season ending without runners advancing past the Section meet, the Bombers saw lots of success with individual times and records, especially at the Cannon Falls meet at the Fairgrounds.
