“Stand up!” is what the sergeant at the Civil War reenactment said. When all of the sixth graders stood up, the reenactors started to introduce themselves. The Civil War reenactment happened on April 2nd, 2024 in the Middle School and High School library.
Learning about the Civil War is important so nobody forgets or repeats what happened in the 1800s. The Civil War was a conflict between the Southern and Northern states over slavery. That’s exactly what the sixth graders were learning about in Social Studies with Missy Klapperich. The Civil War reenactment was meant to give the sixth graders a better visual about what had happened during the time of the war.
Sixth grader Lola Winchell says, “My favorite part of the reenactment was when they showed us how they would perform surgery and how to amputate a leg.” When the medic showed the sixth graders all of the cool tools and gadgets; they really wanted to pay more attention so they all got closer to see what amputating a leg was like back then.
The reenactors needed some volunteers, so they asked for nine sixth-graders to go up and help them either set up a tent, set up a flag, or get changed into uniforms that the soldiers used to wear during the Civil War. Sixth grader Kayla Kiffmeyer says, “I thought the volunteers putting up the tent was the most fun thing to watch, in my opinion.”
“The American flag they showed us was very cool in my opinion,” Lillian Olund, a sixth grader said. Even though they couldn’t show it in full length to the sixth graders, they still thought it was very cool and interesting to see. The reason why they couldn’t put the flag at full length was because it would’ve gone right through the ceiling and made a hole.
The final thing the Civil War reenactors showed the sixth graders was what the women in the 1800s had to wear. Then after they showed them, they had a few sixth-grade girls go up and try on some cool hats the women used to wear, and gloves and mittens too.
Those are some of the things that had happened in the Civil War reenactment for the 6th graders. The Civil War is really important to learn because it helps us remember what has happened in the past and what not to repeat in future years to come.
