The Middle School Student Council, or the MSSC, was setting up for the dance with the hope of doing better than last year. Soon after setting up students began to trickle into the atrium for the first middle school dance of the year: The Winter Formal. The mood was electric and full of excitement. People had been excited for a while. As soon as the first beat dropped, students and chaperones could tell it was going to be astonishing.
A month before the dance, the MSSC started planning the dance. They talked about what to sell, who would chaperone, how last year went, and more details. This year they planned to have a photo booth and snacks and drinks, with some restrictions. MSSC hoped to have an even better dance than before since they do these dances annually. The food they sold was chips, chocolate chip cookies, two different types of sugar cookies, and drinks such as Gatorade and water. The grades allowed into the dance were 6th through 8th, with no outside students allowed into the dance.
The DJ was DJ Verde. The chaperones were Mrs. Miller, Ms. Broring, Mr. Strauss, and Mr. Stachowski. For decorations, MSSC put up many lights in different places in the atrium. Some were on poles and others on ledges. MSSC also put up cardboard letter banners around. DJ Verde brought many lights of his own, some of which flashed and others just glowed.
This dance was the first for most of the 6th graders. Melody Morgan gives a very good perspective of what it was like as a 6th grader at the dance. Morgan said that her favorite part was hanging out and dancing with her friends. When asked about her favorite song she said “The song I liked most was definitely ‘Fein’ because everybody was singing all at once and it was very loud, but fun.” Morgan said that if she could change anything about the dance it would be a bigger variety of snacks and better communication because there were some kids who came early and had to wait until 6:30. Morgan stated “I am very happy about this dance and all the fun we all had there.” The last question she was asked was if she was excited for the next dance; “I am very excited for the next dance and to see everyone there again”.
The next person interviewed is a seventh grader. It’s her first year here in Cannon Falls, and her name is Allie Finne. Finne’s past school had dances, but she thinks Cannon’s are better. Her favorite part was when DJ Verde was playing fine but she says “They should have played ‘Fein’ earlier in and the other good songs.” That was the one thing she would change if she could. Finne favorite song that was played was “Low” by Flo Rida. Finne said “I really enjoyed the dance because of my friends,” just like Morgan did too. When asked if she was excited about the next dance, she said that she was really excited.
As the very last song boomed through the speaker, the students started to pack up their necessities for their trip home. Some had had the time of their life while others had experienced something new. Many hope to go to dances in the future. Others are excited for their very last in middle school and look forward to the future high school dances. The MSSC was very happy with their result: Over one hundred students showed up to that dance, and as a result, MSSC made a profit. The next middle school dance is planned to happen on April 4th.
