The Cannon Falls Varsity softball team is halfway through their season. The team has a record of 7–6 after playing many top-ranked teams in the state. Unfortunately, a lot of games have been postponed due to weather, but the extra time has given the team more time to prepare. The girls are focused on collecting more wins and continuing to sharpen up before playoffs. One highlight of the season so far is beating Stewartville in an exciting nine-inning game. Bomber softball is signed up for a tough schedule, but Coach Templin is intentionally challenging the girls to improve the softball program. One player who has helped the Bombers secure major wins is senior pitcher Ally Pagel.
Ally is a strikeout artist. She reached the 400-strikeout milestone early in the season and is working toward 500 before her high school career ends. When asked how she stays consistent in the circle, Pagel remarks, “The biggest thing that helps me stay consistent is just my mindset. I know that I am capable of performing in big moments, and I just remind myself there is no other place I’d rather be.” She also adds that her teammates help her the most in tough situations. They remind her that she isn’t alone and that the defense behind her has her back. One reason behind Ally’s success is her throwing partner behind the plate, sophomore catcher Mya Menge.
Mya Menge is both an offensive and defensive weapon. Mya states, “When I am catching, I mostly focus on trying to keep everything in front of me and get as many strikes as I can,” when asked her main focus while catching. Menge has a gifted swing. She has hit two home runs so far and gets on base consistently. Her advice to athletes wanting to improve their hitting is, “Work harder than everyone else, take extra reps, stay confident in the box, and believe in your skills.” Mya doesn’t only contribute skills to her team but also positive and competitive energy alongside captain Josie Sjoquist.
Third baseman Josie Sjoquist is a Bomber role model, not only in sports but also in school. Josie is a board scholar, which is an award given to those who maintain a 3.95 GPA or higher throughout their high school years. Josie is also a captain on the team. She says, “I try to be a leader for our team by setting an expectation to work hard and stay positive through my actions.” Her position as a third baseman is vital for defensive success. Josie’s tip for staying ready for fast action plays is to go over situations in her head and move her feet at all times. Josie shares that the most important thing is to not dwell on errors. She remarks, “It is important to reset and just focus on making the next play,” which is good advice for athletes in all different sports.
The team has an optimistic outlook on the rest of the season. Their main goal is to get their bats going and climb their way up in state rankings. With their determination and strong bond, anything is possible for these athletes. The Bombers face off against the Randolph Rockets next on May 5th, in Randolph at 4:30 p.m.
