On January 8, 2024, Fifteen middle school mathletes walked through the doors of Kenyon-Wanamingo ready to place high and sure enough they did. The Cannon Falls black team placed 2nd with a team member getting first in the individual rounds. Middle school math league is one of the most successful activities of Cannon Falls Schools.
Middle school math league students arrive at school at 6:00 am to do math. They really enjoy it too. When asked, Brekkyn Ayres said she joined because “She thought it would be a nice and fun experience.” They mostly come to do math and hang out with friends. Some of their favorite things about math league are the math, being with friends, and being able to do something they love as a competition. There are a total of 15 students in math league.
Their coach Jayme Miller loves teaching math and wanted to be the coach because if she didn’t do it no one would. All the mathletes love to be coached by her. When asked what her favorite thing about coaching math league is she said “The best part about is that it is the only time that I’m in a math classroom where everybody there actually wants to learn math.” She is planning on doing it next year. She is also surprised by how much the sixth graders can learn just by listening to how the others do it.
The black team got second out of ten teams from five different schools. The red team got sixth only two points behind fifth, and the white got ninth. The white team was mostly sixth graders that have never learned nor seen any of these things. The medals were awarded to first through ninth. The two people that tied for ninth from Cannon Falls were Van Webb and Henry Flodeen. Henry Nygaard got fourth and Amelia Fick placed first.
