A bright red heel. Fashion. A demanding boss. These are things that might pop into someone’s head after hearing about the Devil Wears Prada films. The sequel just came out last May with a bang, grossing 233.6 million in the first weekend of hitting theaters, according to The Walt Disney Company. This is a lot of money especially because the first movie came out with people being afraid of the reaction of Dame Anna Wintour. This is because Wintour was believed to be the inspiration for the Devil Wears Prada’s main antagonist. But that didn’t hold either films back from being sensational.
The Devil Wears Prada, which came out around 20 years before the recent sequel is a wonderful film. It gives an inside look on the massive fashion industry by focusing on the fake fashion company, Runway. “Being somebody that likes fashion shows, it was definitely the best one I have ever seen.” says 8th grader Bella Boym on the first film. The main character, Andy Sachs, applies to be the assistant to Miranda Priestly. Miranda is the editor-in-chief of Runway and she runs it with an iron fist. Now Andy has to figure out how to fulfill increasingly impossible tasks while trying to hold onto her ever shrinking personal life. Andy works alongside Miranda’s other assistant Emily, who is played by Emily Blunt. Blunt is not the only famous actor in this movie. Andy is played by Anne Hathaway and Miranda is played by Meryl Streep. Another coworker from the movie named Nigel is played by Stanley Tucci.
The original film was a great movie with phenomenal actors. But going into the sequel, many fans might ask for an aspect that didn’t get delivered in the first movie. “I thought that the first movie was a little slow to start. I didn’t really know where the plot was going, so I hope that for the second one, it seems a little more direct,” was Lola Winchell’s opinion. Some good news on the second movie was that it provided some closure on parts of the first movie that were left unanswered before now.
But the closure that was needed couldn’t have happened without some of the original actors to provide a new chapter of this story. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, who played some of the most beloved characters, returned for the Devil Wears Prada 2. The film also had many celebrity appearances such as Lady Gaga and Carl Anthony Towns, along with some famous designers. And while the movie begins in New York, the characters fly to Italy for work. This gives dazzling views of old architecture, sparkly lakes, and modern fashion shows. The movie shot these scenes in Milan and Lake Como according to The Independent.
This may cause people to wonder how this plot could live up to the all-star cast and world class destinations. But this new story is safe and comfortable yet new and modern. The movie is about how all of these characters have grown up and yet they still had the same goals and passions. After all of these years they were all in the same room again with new problems. Andy is back at Runway, this time writing articles, and Emily working at a high-level position at Dior. While Miranda has an opportunity for a big promotion, a problem arises and she begrudgingly has to enlist Andy for help. There are also a lot of twists and turns that lead to betrayal, love, and realizing that people can change.
There are many movies coming out this year, like Moana, Avenger’s Doomsday and Supergirl. With all of these new movies coming out, watching the Devil Wears Prada might slip someone’s mind. But after hearing about the phenomenal actors, the guest stars, and the dream destination, hopefully everyone will be clamoring to see the movie that is full of closure and new beginnings.
