If one were to walk down the hallway near the gym they would notice the trophy case displayed with all of the awards Cannon Falls sports and activities have received from participating at state competitions. Now, if one were to actually to take a gander at the gleaming case they would notice that tennis hasn’t seen a new trophy added to the case for over twenty years. However, that curse has been broken. Senior Tayler Bannit and Junior Maddie Adel competed in the MSHSL state tennis tournament last week as a doubles team and finished second.

The two girls couldn’t be more proud of the way they played and ended their season. Bannit admits that during game point of the championship match that she had tears in her eyes because she was so happy about how far she and Adel went in the competition. During, “The last game and points,” Bannit adds, “we just focused on us having fun, so at that point we didn’t really care about necessarily winning. We just went out there and left it all out there on the court.” Which is exactly what the two tennis stars did.

[I] can’t complain about my last match being the state championship

The girls went into the match knowing it was going to be tough competition. The Breck team that they competed against in the championship match took second last year at the state tennis tournament. The team they lost to were two seniors from Breck. Adel commented that, “We knew they were going to be hard, but we were just trying to have a positive attitude about it.” The girls finished out strong and with grace and couldn’t be more happy with the results. Bannit stated that, “[I] can’t complain about my last match being the state championship.” As for Adel who has one more year left to play, “I’m just taking it all in and just not taking it for granted. I’m enjoying it while I can.” The second place state trophy will now finally rid some of the dust that has collected in the display case, and as for the two girls, well…they made history.
