The CFHS trap team is already into the swing of another season
Pull! The clay pigeon flies to the left, and Alex Engebretsen pulls the trigger and follows through, while smiling as the clay turns to dust. John Twedt and Andrew Ayers are recording the scores, and John tries to muster up a straight face as he yells “LOSS!” After a couple of giggles Alex whips around and replies “What!?! Can you even see the broad side of the barn? I got that!” “Just keeping you on your toes!” Retorts John with a chuckle. The Cannon Falls High School Trap Team has started their third spring season, and it’s already off to a great start along with great humor. The first of April was the beginning of the trap season for Cannon Falls.
Usually Students shoot 50 times a week, but because they are not shooting on Easter this year the first two weeks of the season students will shoot 75 times instead.
The biggest difference in this years spring team is the number of participants. “Before we had 30 or so kids on the spring team – now, we have 50.” reported John with such a large influx the team has changed practices from being 1-4 on Sundays to 10-5.
This doesn’t mean students have to spend 7 hours in the rain on a Sunday. In fact, trap shooting is a unique high school sport because of it’s flexibility. “Sometimes I show up right away, but other days I’ll come near the end of practices” stated Alex. “It’s nice that all I have to do is get my shots in and then I can head out.”
As practices continue, the Cannon Falls Trap Team gets prepared for the two biggest outings – South Saint Paul Trap Invite and State competition in Alexandria. Hopefully they’ll be prepared by then.
