Riverdale

The Lantern reviews new, hit show Riverdale.

It’s one a.m. on a monday and what am I doing? Watching one of the most addicting shows I’ve ever seen. “What is this captivating series,” you may be asking? None other than Riverdale, a show about beloved comic book characters from “Archie”. Riverdale is a show depicting five nosey teenagers who try to solve the murder of Jason Blossom. The comics are about a boy named Archie who lives a normal teenage life. He has to deal with school, family, and love, just like every teenager. As I was watching the series, I noticed how different the characters were in the show compared to the comic.

Everybody’s favorite red head, Archie Andrews made his first appearance in Pep Comics #22,. There is not a lot of information on this edition of Pep Comics, but there is a lot of information on Archie himself. He was originally known as “America’s Typical Teenager”, but when you compare that to the show, it’s the biggest lie you will ever hear. In the show, Archie is the opposite of a typical teenager.

Another extraordinary teenager is Veronica Lodge. Known as Riverdale’s privileged princess, she is the richest girl in Riverdale and is not afraid to show it. However, even though she is rich, she uses her money for the greater good. For example, in one episode she helps her friend, Ethel, feel better after her dad is fired. Hiram Lodge is the father of Veronica Lodge and also the owner of a large business named after him, which is how Veronica is able to feed her expensive desires.

Finally, there is Betty Cooper, the classic girl next door with blonde hair and a happy family. There is nothing wrong with Betty Cooper. However, when we look at the show, we see that she has a secret side. This side of Betty is Dark Betty. She is a scary character who nobody should mess with and was first introduced in chapter three: Body Double. Even though Betty is a secretive character, I still want to see more of her.

If you couldn’t tell, the characters have changed drastically since the comics, but I can’t tell if this change is good or bad. Either way, it’s an entertaining change. My good friend Vienna Qualey says “Riverdale is a relatable to teens, besides the you know, murder which is why it’s so popular.” In conclusion, I think Riverdale is a great show and if you like murder and love triangles then this is the show for you.
