The CF girls’ volleyball team has finished its season with a 15–14 record, ending their run after a tough match against Section 10’s seed Zumbrota‑Mazeppa. Even though the final result wasn’t exactly what the team hoped for, there were so many positive moments that made the season a success.
This year’s roster had 18 players, with most of the starters being freshmen and sophomores; the team was definitely young. After losing a lot of players from last season, the whole squad had to adjust, especially when senior captain Falon Hepola suffered an ACL and meniscus injury during a home game against the ZM Cougars.
Coach Becca shared: “Falon was a leader for our program on and off the court, and although she remained a leader for her teammates, it was very obvious that her absence left a hole on our court. After discussing with our athletes that they needed to work together and rely on each other on the court to keep the communication up, we were able to adapt. Our team was able to gain back confidence throughout the weeks after Falon’s injury, and it was amazing to see them step outside of their comfort zone to face new challenges.”
With Falon out, setter Libby Sampson stepped up big time. As the only other varsity setter, Libby became one of the leaders on the court, running a 5–1 offense (which means she set both from the front row and back row). Sampson, when asked what the adjustment was like when Hepola got hurt, stated: “Mentally, I knew I had to step up as a leader to help my team with the loss of one of our teammates. Physically, I was already playing all the way around this year, so my body was used to being in the game at all times. It is very different being the only setter on the court. I’m touching the ball almost every single play, which makes me have to be on point at all times. It’s also a lot more responsibility, which I welcome.” She also hit a major milestone: 1,000 career set assists. Alongside that, Katie Tipton achieved her own milestone: 1,000 career digs.
Katie, in her third year as the varsity libero, has been a standout teammate: strong communicator, super disciplined, and always making scrappy plays. When asked about hitting 1,000 digs, she said, “It felt incredible to hit the mark of 1,000 career digs. I have worked very hard in order to get better, whether it’s during the school season, club season, or summer volleyball lessons and leagues. It felt very rewarding for me to know that hard work really does pay off. I also just want to thank everyone who has pushed me to get better. I am so thankful to have Coach Huseth and Coach Becca. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.” Katie’s favorite match this season was a thrilling four‑set win over Red Wing, a game the team will definitely remember.
When postseason play came around, the team was seeded 7th; their first playoff match was against Zumbrota‑Mazeppa. They put up a good fight but lost in four sets, closing out the season. While the end was disappointing, the players and coaches were proud of what had been achieved this year.
Even though the squad didn’t make it to the Civic Center, they sure made many memories together that will be remembered over the wins and losses. Off the court, the bond between the girls was strong. From pasta dinners to cheering on other fall sports, the team became tight‑knit. Assistant Coach Becca reflected: “I’ve learned that the best teams aren’t just talented; they’re connected. Heading into next year, I hope to keep building on that chemistry, keep improving our consistency, and help the team push even further. It is going to be a blast!”
