Two sisters search for each other in a futuristic world.

Celia has been stranded on an abandoned island for three years, left without her memories. The one thing she can remember is her sister Kasey, who lives an ocean away in an eco-city. Author Joan He’s The Ones Were Meant to Find is a beautifully written story about sisters living in a dystopian world full of technology.

As wildfires and monsoons ravaged the land, the continents became increasingly more uninhabitable. In order to save humanity, scientists turned towards eco-cities. In this technologically advanced future, walking around as a hologram is the norm. Only necessary activities for survival are performed in reality in order to maintain a sustainable life. The unique setting of The Ones Were Meant to Find is its greatest quality. The way He depicted the future in The Ones Were Meant to Find was truly fascinating. The eco-city and its technology were explained very well, which made the story seem more realistic.

Celia and Kasey’s relationship was an interesting aspect of the book. They are complete opposites personality-wise. As it switched between each of their perspectives, the differences between them were evident. Where Kasey was introverted and logical, Celia was outgoing and charismatic. This definitely made Celia’s view more enjoyable to read. Comparing the futuristic city Kasey lives in to the small island Celia is trapped on, the differences in their lifestyles can easily be seen. The interesting characters combined with science fiction made the story stand out.

Separated by the sea, both sisters struggle to find their way back to each other. While Celia searches for a way off the island, Kasey works to unravel the mystery behind Celia’s disappearance. Although the start of the book was not very exciting, it ended up being worth the read in the end. The story was a bit confusing in the beginning as the complicated world was just beginning to be explained. The early parts of the plot definitely left a lot of questions. As the book progresses and more information is revealed, the storyline picks up. While reading, it was difficult to tell what direction the book was heading. It’s full of twists, leaving room for a surprising ending. The Ones Were Meant to Find shares a new view on the future and its technology. Although the story is fictional, it brings up the intriguing question of how the real world may look years from now, especially with all the new advancements in technology today. Celia and Kasey’s story was a pleasurable one to read, despite the slow beginning. The Ones Were Meant to Find is the perfect book for dystopian and technology lovers.
